WeOut: Collaborative Travel Planning Made Simple
Planning a trip can be stressful, especially when coordinating with a group. WeOut is a mobile app designed to simplify trip planning by helping travelers collaboratively build organized itineraries that fit their budgets and interests.
Role: UX Designer (Solo Project)
Tools: Figma, Miro, Canva, Google Forms, Zoom
Timeline: 4 weeks
Problem
Travel planning often creates unnecessary stress and disorganization. Users juggle multiple booking sites, emails, and messages to coordinate plans. When trips involve groups, managing different budgets and preferences becomes even more challenging.
Research
To understand how travelers approach trip planning, I conducted five user interviews and a survey distributed via social media. Participants were 20–40 years old, middle-class travelers who value structure but dislike overly “touristy” experiences.
Findings
Users feel overwhelmed by scattered travel information.
Budgeting and communication are top pain points in group planning.
Travelers want local, authentic experiences without overspending.
They wish for a single, organized system that keeps everything in one place.
I applied the same analytical rigor I once used in scientific research to form hypotheses, collect qualitative and quantitative data, and identify actionable insights.
Problem Definition
After synthesizing my findings through an affinity diagram and empathy mapping, I developed this problem statement:
“A middle-class traveler who doesn’t like uncertainty and travels with a group needs a collaborative itinerary tool that accommodates individual budgets and interests to reduce stress and improve coordination.”
Ideation and Strategy
Using I Like, I Wish, What If brainstorming and a MoSCoW prioritization matrix, I identified key features to guide the MVP design:
Must-Haves:
-
Shared itineraries for group trips
-
Budget tracking and cost breakdowns
-
Communication tools within the app
Should-Haves:
-
Activity recommendations from locals
-
Expense split calculator
Design Processs
I developed user scenarios, storyboards, and a journey map to visualize the user experience from planning to travel. Sketches and digital wireframes evolved through several feedback rounds and usability testing.
Iterations Focused On:
-
Improving clarity of the itinerary builder
-
Simplifying navigation and visual hierarchy
-
Ensuring collaboration features were intuitive
Solution
WeOut allows users to:
-
Create and share detailed, budget-friendly itineraries
-
Collaborate in real time with fellow travelers
-
Keep bookings, notes, and documents in one secure place
Final Design Highlights
Simplified trip overview page
Color-coded itinerary by day
Built-in expense tracker and chat feature
